Gratitude

God is in control, and therefore in everything I can give thanks—not because of the situation but because of the One who directs and rules over it.

It takes courage to give thanks when you get devastating news and when bad things are happening. King Jehoshaphat was devoted to Me. When he was told a vast army made up of three different enemies was on its way to Jerusalem, he feared for the kingdom of Judah. However, this faithful ruler’s first response was to ask Me for guidance and to proclaim a fast in his kingdom. People came from all the cities of Judah to pray, and the king prayed powerfully, “O GOD, God of our ancestors, are you not God in heaven above and ruler of all kingdoms below? You hold all power and might in your fist—no one stands a chance against you!” (2 Chronicles 20:6, MSG).

Jahaziel, a priest, gave these prophetic words: “You won’t have to lift a hand in this battle; just stand firm . . . and watch GOD’s saving work for you take shape” (2 Chronicles 20:17, MSG). To honor God, Jehoshaphat appointed a choir to march ahead of the troops singing, “Give thanks to the LORD; his faithful love endures forever” (2 Chronicles 20:21). As the choir sang, I caused these three armies coming against Judah to fight each other. When Jehoshaphat’s soldiers arrived at the lookout point over the Valley of Beracah, the soldiers of the other armies had already killed each other. Do you believe that I can handle your situation too? Begin by giving thanks and then leave the results up to Me.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
