Come And See

To those who have been hauling around a long list of rules. . . . To those who are weighed down with the fear and guilt of religion. To all the fans who are worn out on religion, Jesus invites you to follow him.

Invite people to spend time with you before you ask them to accept My gift of eternal life. Many are burned out on religion and tired of reading a list of everything they shouldn’t do. You’ve made attempts at verbalizing the story of how you came to know Me, but there are awkward silences and you aren’t sure what to do next. Sometimes a heart is ready for the gospel, and faith comes quickly. But more often, skeptical people want to observe what they are considering before saying yes.

Invite those people to walk beside you. Study the example in John 1. When two curious disciples of John the Baptist asked where Jesus was staying, He said, “Come and see.” They accepted the invitation and spent the rest of the day with Him. Allow people to be with you and to see your faith in action. When they observe your strength under the pressure of disappointment, pain, and loss, they will be curious about what gives you so much peace and joy. Point them to Jesus by the way you live your life. Answer their questions about the hope you have beyond this world. Let them hang out with you, and in due time they will respond to the invitation to follow Me.

“Come and see,” [Jesus] said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
