How do I know when I am stubborn?

But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas.

Psalm 81:11-12

Pharaoh’s heart, however, remained hard. He still refused to listen, just as the Lord had predicted.

Exodus 7:13

Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.

Hebrews 3:12-14

You are stubborn when you refuse to believe that Jesus can make a difference in your life. You are stubborn when you allow difficult circumstances to convince you that God does not care; when you stop praying because you’ve made up your mind it won’t help anyway; when you refuse to trust God and instead depend on your own strength. Do any of these situations describe you? At the core of stubbornness is the desire to disregard the overwhelming evidence against you. It is your way or no way. You just can’t admit another way might be better, or worse yet, you don’t even want to consider another option. The worst kind of stubbornness is when you refuse to consider that following God’s rules for living, as found in the Bible, will make your life better. You’ve got your plans, and you don’t want to admit that God’s plan for your life might actually be better. You’d have to give up certain habits and lifestyle choices, and you just don’t want to go there. Let God break through the stubbornness. He can show you how to give up those things you think are so good and exchange them for things he knows are so much better. When you humble yourself to admit there might be a better way, not only will you experience a divine moment with God, but you’ll have a breakthrough in your relationships with others, too.

DIVINE PROMISE

I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 36:26
