How do I fight spiritual battles?

A MOMENT with GOD

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.

1 Peter 5:8-9

The devil . . . was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

In order to be effective on the battlefield, a soldier must be well trained and properly equipped. The warrior must have both a defensive stronghold and offensive weaponry. Combatants must know the enemy and be alert for surprise attacks. So it is in your spiritual battle with Satan. He is determined to destroy your faith by leading you into sin and discouragement, and he attacks you with blatant temptation and deceptive lies. The Bible is your field manual for fighting back. It trains you in the best weaponry and tactics for this very real and very dangerous spiritual warfare. Because Scripture is so essential for the Christian, Satan’s first tactic in battle is to distort God’s Word. If he can raise suspicion about the integrity of Scripture, he can get you to question God’s will and intentions for you. Study the Bible so you know it well enough to recognize Satan’s lies, which often come in the guise of cultural mores and worldviews. Satan’s second tactic is to get you to rely on yourself instead of God. Satan will tempt you to rely on your own resources—on the tangible, measurable assets you can easily quantify. While it is wise to understand your resources, it is unwise to stake your ultimate victory on them. Prepare yourself with the resources God provides. Then rely on God’s protection, not your own intellect or cleverness.
