How should I discipline those I lead?

A MOMENT with GOD

Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

Proverbs 13:24

Discipline with love. Discipline is about relationships, not rules. It’s about safety, not retaliation. Your goal is restoration, not revenge; teaching, not taunting.

Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise you will ruin their lives.

Proverbs 19:18

Discipline right away—before it is too late. Timely discipline puts people back on track. When they wander off the path, it’s much easier to find it again if they’ve gone just a few feet away from it. But if they’ve gone far off the path, it’s more difficult to find it again. Then they are in danger of getting so far off track that you won’t be able to lead them back.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Ephesians 6:4

Never discipline in anger. It is difficult to make good decisions when you are consumed by anger and your emotions drive your thinking. Discipline given in anger is often spiteful and harsh and brings shame rather than restoration.

Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.

Colossians 3:21

Discipline without causing aggravation and discouragement. Disciplinary measures may cause conflict because the person who is disciplined will probably become angry. But aggravation is different. It is caused by constant nagging that implies a person will never be good enough or will never get it right. It attacks a person’s sense of value and worth instead of focusing on the behavior that needs to be corrected.

Our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.

Hebrews 12:10

Discipline with godly wisdom. Every leader makes some mistakes when disciplining the people they lead. Since God’s discipline is always best, you need to constantly seek his wisdom. God’s wisdom comes from his Word, but it also comes from other godly people who immerse themselves in his Word and who practice appropriate discipline.
