Is criticism helpful or harmful?

A MOMENT with GOD

Why do you condemn another believer? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

Romans 14:10

Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.

James 4:11

Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.

Proverbs 12:18

A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.

Proverbs 15:1

When you offer constructive criticism, it can be a welcome and wholesome gift—a divine moment—if it is given in the spirit of love. But if your criticism ridicules, demeans, or judges, it has harmful consequences: It tears down the person’s self-esteem, making him or her feel shamed and worthless; it damages your reputation, making you look mean and merciless; it damages your ability to offer helpful advice because others will tend to become defensive; and it brings greater judgment upon yourself from God, who detests it when you hurt others. Before criticizing someone, take an inventory of your own sins and shortcomings so that you can approach the person with humility and understanding.

FIRST GET RID OF THE LOG IN YOUR OWN EYE; THEN YOU WILL SEE WELL ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH THE SPECK IN YOUR FRIEND’S EYE.
