What principles should I keep in mind when making decisions?

A MOMENT with GOD

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 1:7

Good leaders make decisions with humility and reverence for God.

Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers.

1 Kings 12:8

Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.

Proverbs 12:15

Leaders have many people offering them advice. If you consistently reject the advice of wise counselors, like Rehoboam did, you might make foolish decisions. But if you listen to the advice of others and weigh it against God’s Word, you are more likely to make good choices. Leaders should remember that being open to good advice is not a sign of weakness or inadequacy but rather shows wisdom.

What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Matthew 16:26

Leaders must resist the temptation to make decisions out of a desire for personal gain. Such ambition eventually leads to bad decisions and unethical behavior.

One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles.

Luke 6:12-13

Leaders need to saturate their decisions with prayer. This is especially true for decisions concerning the selection and care of those with whom you will work closely.

The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23

Good decisions are always in keeping with the traits that the Holy Spirit cultivates in you, while bad decisions often mean you are rejecting his influence on your heart.

Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow.

Your laws please me; they give me wise advice.

Knowing Scripture and gleaning wisdom from it give you clear direction in your decision making and provide you with the discernment you need to make the best choices. A good decision is one that is consistent with the principles found in God’s Word.

IF YOU NEED WISDOM, ASK OUR GENEROUS GOD, AND HE WILL GIVE IT TO YOU. HE WILL NOT REBUKE YOU FOR ASKING. BUT WHEN YOU ASK HIM, BE SURE THAT YOUR FAITH IS IN GOD ALONE. DO NOT WAVER, FOR A PERSON WITH DIVIDED LOYALTY IS AS UNSETTLED AS A WAVE OF THE SEA THAT IS BLOWN AND TOSSED BY THE WIND.   James 1:5-6
