For Our Enemies

CALLED TO PRAY WOULD BE INCOMPLETE without a devotion on praying for our enemies. I must admit, this topic isn’t one of my favorites. My carnal nature would prefer to ignore that part of Scripture. But that alone confirms its importance!

Let’s be honest—praying for people who hurt and betray us isn’t easy. But in Matthew 5:44-45, the Lord said, “I tell you to love your enemies and pray for anyone who mistreats you. Then you will be acting like your Father in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both good and bad people” (CEV).

That translation is especially powerful (and convicting) because it says we are to pray for “anyone.” In essence God is asking us to climb one step higher than forgiveness; he wants us to use our prayers to bless even our worst enemy.

Therefore, as we pray for our peace, our patience, and our deliverance, let’s also pray for the peace, patience, and deliverance of our enemies, for they need our prayers the most.

STRENGTH IN THE WORD

If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.

I’ll pray for my enemies with a sincere heart.

PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS

Dear Lord,

This may be the hardest prayer to pray, but I know that it pleases you. And pleasing you, O Lord, is my greatest joy.

Please bless __________, even though they’ve mistreated me. I’m praying that you send them peace, patience, and deliverance. Take away their pain, mend their broken pieces, and fill them with joy. Let your goodness and presence give them a change of heart.
