For Ending Excuses

ITZHAK PERLMAN FELL IN LOVE WITH THE VIOLIN at the age of three. He was determined to become a world-renowned musician. But a year later, he was diagnosed with polio, a disease that crippled his mobility. Many would have given up, but Perlman pressed on. Today, he is celebrated as one of the greatest classical violinists in the world—sometimes performing from his scooter.

In God’s Kingdom, there are no excuses. We have to do our part because prayer works with corresponding action. For example, if a debt needs to be paid off, someone must work; and if you want to fulfill a dream, you must take the necessary steps.

Scripture declares, “Faith by itself isn’t enough” (James 2:17). The Message Bible makes the same point, but with less sugarcoating: “Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?”

Itzhak Perlman didn’t allow polio to be an excuse; he took action! And similarly, when we back our prayers with action, great things will follow.

Dear Lord,

Teach me how to partner with my prayers.

Please guide me through the practical steps I should take.

Show what seeds to plant and what good habits to sow.

My heart is eager and willing.
