For Building Friendship

WRITTEN AS A POEM in 1855, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” has comforted many souls throughout the world. The beloved hymn describes the Lord’s never-failing, ever-redeeming friendship; a relationship that’s forged through prayer:

What a friend we have in Jesus,

all our sins and griefs to bear.

What a privilege to carry

everything to God in prayer.

As I sing those lyrics, I can’t help but wonder, Does God count us as friends?

Truth is, God is everyone’s friend—but we’re not all his friends. In Isaiah 41:8, God classifies his children into three categories: servants, chosen people, and friends. “People of Israel, you are my servants. People of Jacob, I chose you. You are from the family of my friend Abraham” (NCV).

A friend of God prays, even when she doesn’t need anything. She dials up, chitchats, and calls his name—just because. By faith, she builds a relationship with a God she can’t see; and through her faith, God calls her his friend.

STRENGTH IN THE WORD

Abraham became God’s friend.

TODAY I DECLARE

God is my friend, and I’m determined to be his.

PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS

Dear Lord,

You’ve been a good friend to me; far better than I could ever hope. You’ve stuck closer than any brother; you’ve loved me through thick and thin.

Now, tell me, O Lord—how can I be a friend to you? Like Abraham, who was faithful and obedient, I want my life to bring you joy. Therefore, shape me into a faithful friend—whom you can chat with and trust.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
