“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”

Matthew 7:15

Jesus warned the disciples about people who say they are representing God, but who are not speaking truth. These deceivers pretend to be Christians. Their words seem acceptable at first hearing, but their message is inevitably recognized as being contrary to the gospel.

The aim of these wolves is to lure people away from Jesus, from the cross, and from his call to discipleship—and that is bait for spiritual death. These false teachers may deny the resurrection, or they may try to persuade people that they have to do more than trust in Jesus if they want to be saved.

The best way to deal with false teachers is to know God’s truth so well that you easily spot a fake. It’s to reorient yourself to the truth of the gospel. Know the truth—and practice explaining it in case God gives you the opportunity to protect others from the world’s false prophets.

Lord, may I never fail to marvel at the gospel truth—or to share it when you give me the opportunity. Keep me alert! Amen.
