Beautiful Word Devotional #273

“Small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Matthew 7:14

We wish the road that leads to eternal life were easy, wide, and simple to navigate, but as Jesus taught, the way is narrow and few find it. Why is that? Isn’t the gospel for anyone? Why don’t more people find this narrow way?

The way is narrow because the toll to travel that road is humility. We have to recognize both our sinfulness and our utter inability to live a life of love and holiness. We can’t rely on self-improvement programs or our own abilities to be right with God. We have to humble ourselves and admit we’re lost without his forgiveness, his transforming work in our hearts, and his guidance and protection in our lives. And admitting these truths is not easy for us human beings who pride ourselves on our self-sufficiency.

The way is narrow, but humbly relinquishing control of our lives over to God means eternal life in the future and abundant life with him now.

Lord, thank you for showing me the narrow way and giving me the humility to enter its gate, amen.
