Beautiful Word Devotional #23
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16
We read verses like this and nod, Oh, yes! I want to shine so others see Jesus in me. But what does that really mean?
To understand Jesus’ instructions, we have to back up to the previous verse where Jesus said, “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house” (v. 15). In order for the lamp to provide good light, it must be placed where others can benefit from it.
Being a light isn’t about trying hard to be one. It is about being gloriously you in the midst of your life, loving Jesus and pointing to Him. To think Well, I’m not special. What do I have to offer? is to forcibly remove yourself from the lampstand God has given you.
Wherever you are today, dare to shine. Embrace the place God has for you.
Lord, I’m glad that I don’t have to try to be a light. Use me to shine brightly where you have me, amen.
