Beautiful Word Devotional #22

“Martha, Martha . . . you are worried and upset about many things. . . . Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:42

Martha and Mary often welcomed Jesus into their home. Gracious hostesses, they willingly fed Jesus and his disciples. Loving her ministry of hospitality and the opportunity to serve others, Martha spent much time preparing.

Mary served Jesus, too, but in an entirely different way. Hers was not the tangible service of preparing a meal. She did not chop vegetables or bake bread. No, she sat quietly at his feet, listening to him teach. In that quiet place at his sacred feet, she honored him and worshipped him. She gave him the precious gift of her undivided attention.

Although Martha’s service was necessary and appreciated, she chose activity in the kitchen over adoration at Jesus’ feet. She didn’t realize that this Someone was more important than meeting the physical needs of her guests. That’s why Jesus praised Mary’s actions over Martha’s. Here, devotion was a wiser choice than service.

Lord, I want my life to be more about devotion than service today and every day. Oh, how I love you! Amen.
