I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.

Hebrews 8:12

Ours is not an absentminded God who forgets things. What the author of Hebrews was saying is that God allows his love to trump his memory when it comes to our sin. He chooses not to remember our sin because his Son Jesus already paid the ultimate price for it. And so he pardons. He forgives. He chooses to forget because he loves those he is forgiving.

Now God’s loving and ready forgiveness when we confess our sins doesn’t mean we run around sinning. The complete opposite is true. We instead live with awe and gratitude, for it cost Jesus. We now see it for what it is—evil and awful.

You may be living with shame today. Maybe a particular sin or a series of sins is weighing you down. You may be constantly reminded of your sin because you are living with the consequences daily. Know, however, that you don’t need to live under the burden of condemnation because Jesus absolutely set you free once and for all.

Jesus, thank you for dying for me so my sins can be forgiven and forgotten, amen.
