Why Training Camp Really Matters
Have you ever heard someone say, “I’ve got to go knock the rust off”? Training camp is an opportunity for athletes to do just that. Baseball, football, and basketball have times of training every year, and the first few days are the hardest. It is during those first few days when coaches are able to see what they have to work with and what they will need to focus on over the next few weeks.
Training camps are crucibles for athletes. It is there that their success or failure will be established. Many will be cut from the team, never to play the game they love again. Others will find their way and emerge as a starter, surprising the analysts, fans, coaches, and even themselves at times because they had such a good training camp.
We experience our own training camps as we go through challenging seasons. These seasons have a way to prune us so that they shape and mold our character. Scripture tells us that God doesn’t waste these seasons. Proverbs 25:4 states, “Remove the impurities from silver, and the sterling will be ready for the silversmith.” If you are in the midst of a season that feels like the first few days of training camp, remember that sometimes we have to have the rust knocked off so that God has something to work with.
Remove the impurities from silver, and the sterling will be ready for the silversmith.
