With two games remaining in the 2015 NFL season, Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick needed just one more touchdown pass to beat the record Joe Namath had set for the number of touchdown passes thrown in one season as a Jet. Fitzpatrick, selected in the seventh round of the 2005 draft by the St. Louis Rams, had been on six teams by that point in his ten-season NFL career.

After moving to Houston and settling his family from Tennessee in 2014, Fitzpatrick contributed to the Houston Texans’ nine-win season in Coach Bill O’Brien’s first year as the Texans head coach. The 2014 season had its ups and downs, with Fitzpatrick being benched at one point and finishing 6–6 as a starter. Had he moved forward with the Texans, there would have been plenty of opportunity for improvement.

The Texans decided that they would go a different direction after the 2014 season, and they traded Fitzpatrick to the Jets. This reunited Ryan with his old coach, Chan Gailey. With Fitzpatrick’s contract expiring at the end of his incredible 2015 season, there were reports that Fitzpatrick could get a significant raise, from $$325 million a season to $12 million a season.

If you feel you’ve been passed on like Fitzpatrick was, remember that it only takes one leader to believe in you. When others discover about you what you already believe about yourself, the sky is the limit. Be encouraged by the words of Proverbs 22:29 today: “Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people.” Even if no one seems to notice you, be diligent with the talent you have been given.
