Standing in the Hall of Fame

I’ve always wanted to go to the Pro Football and Baseball Halls of Fame. There is something compelling in taking a trip through the halls of greatness, seeing the memorabilia and the busts of the best players in sports. These men are the most gifted, most competitive, and most determined athletes of their leagues.

What is the key to their long-term success? It was how they used their gifts once they were given the opportunity. John Maxwell says, “Talent is never enough.” As a matter of fact, he even has a book by that title. Talent opens the door, but effort, determination, and perseverance keep it open.

Proverbs 18:16 states, “Giving a gift can open doors; it gives access to important people!” This text is not talking about a bribe. I believe that Solomon is challenging his hearers to work with all diligence and manage their talent. Because stewarding well the abilities that God has given us brings us significant success.

Another verse that speaks in a similar manner when it comes to stewarding our talent is Proverbs 22:29. It states, “Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people.”

Recognize your gifting, develop strategies to utilize your gifting in your work, and do it with all diligence. Over time, you will be noticed, you will get promoted, and you will have the chance to do things that others in your line of work only dream about. Once the gift takes you there, steward it with great determination and perseverance. Remember, talent opens the door, but it isn’t enough to keep it open.
