When the Storms Roll In, Have a Game Plan

In mid-December 2010, the Metrodome in Minneapolis was severely damaged by seventeen inches of snow that caused the Teflon roof to collapse. The Vikings, who were set to play the New York Giants, had to move their game to a Monday night and relocate the game to Detroit. The Vikings organization had been working toward a new stadium plan for quite some time, but until this happened, things were stalled. The roof collapse was the catalyst for building a new stadium.

I was recently visiting with a man who was telling me about a rough storm that was leading to a collapse in his marriage. This storm was vast and beyond the scope of his control, and much of the struggle had to do with the difficulties with his wife’s work.

Those difficulties spilled over into the marriage, and they caused a great distance between the man and his wife. I had to say to him, “Sir, this storm is beyond your control and ability to fix. Once you understand that, you can develop a game plan for how to help your spouse.”

What is your game plan for storms that roll into your family’s life that are beyond your ability to control? My game plan is to be a refuge and shelter for those I love. It involves unconditional love, grace if needed, and tender care, continuously.

My hope is that when the storms come, my family sees the Lord in me, and I believe that this is what he looks like. Psalm 103:8 states, “The LORD is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.”

Decide today that when the storms come, and they will, you will strive to embody these characteristics of God’s character. The best way to do that is to simply ask him to love your crew through you.
