The Values of Champions

Coach Tony Dungy was a master motivator. He knew that he needed to stay a few steps ahead of his players. When asked what it takes to win as a team, Coach Dungy replied, “Hard work and togetherness. They go hand in hand. You need the hard work because it’s such a tough atmosphere to win week in and week out. You need togetherness because you don’t always win, and you gotta hang tough together.”

You know these two ingredients are what make teams great champions. When individuals on a team fail to work hard, they fail to prepare for their potential. When there is division in the ranks of a team, it diverts the team’s attention from what matters most.

If you are leading a team, not only do you have to embody these values, but you also have to expect them of others. Raise the culture of your team by teaching these values. Bring them to the forefront, and ask your team to respond accordingly.

I am sure you have heard the old adage “Don’t expect what you don’t inspect.” Look for these values, and when you don’t find them in play, challenge your teammates, and if you have to, make a change.

Proverbs 10:17 states, “People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will go astray.” When you see your team members accepting discipline, celebrate it and let the rest of the team know what you see.
