I Have to Apologize

At the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant, the host, Steve Harvey, concluded the evening with a huge blunder. He mistakenly crowned Miss Colombia as Miss Universe when the honor actually went to Miss Philippines. I don’t know if there has ever been such a blunder like that in a pageant before. The most awkward moment was when the crown was removed from Miss Colombia’s head and placed on that of Miss Philippines.

What I truly appreciate about Harvey’s mistake is that he was humble, honest, and very remorseful. He apologized and took full responsibility for what had happened. Harvey owned his mistake.

As awkward and hurtful as that moment was, Harvey teaches us all that saying, “I’m sorry,” and “Please forgive me,” is so important. When I watched Harvey’s response to his error, I thought, Now here is a man who has apologized before. Here is a man comfortable with humility. Though a huge star, Steve Harvey didn’t hesitate to take full responsibility for the error and do so publicly.

You can tell a lot about a person who is willing to apologize in public. Proverbs 28:13 states, “People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.” If there is something that you need to take responsibility for, go ahead and just do it. Find the grace that will put that mistake in the past and move forward in freedom.
