The Difference between Demolition and Construction

At the end of the 2015–16 NFL season, with Peyton Manning eyeing retirement and Brock Osweiler a free agent, many speculated that the Denver Broncos were going to be content to tear down their championship team and begin the rebuilding process. With the cost of Manning and Osweiler together, it would be too expensive for Denver to keep other key elements of their championship team. In the end, Manning retired and Osweiler accepted an offer from the Houston Texans, leaving the Broncos with the opportunity to rebuild part of their team.

Every summer our church deploys people all around the world to do missions ministry. We do this because it’s a great exercise in sharing and living out our faith, it catalyzes our partners in other countries, and it grows the faith of the missions teams, which impacts the church body at home. We encourage families to sign up so they can experience ministry together. Usually we have some sort of project that involves some construction that even kids can do. The part the kids like the most is demolition, because they get to rip into stuff and tear it apart.

Now, anyone can do demolition. The Broncos didn’t need their general manager, John Elway, to oversee the demolition of their team, because no skill is required in demolishing something. In fact, Manning and Osweiler helped with the demo when they left the team. The Broncos do need Elway to build the team, because it takes great skill to build.

Proverbs 14:1 states, “A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.” I want to encourage you to invest in yourself and in your home. Learn the skills it takes to be wise, and build something that will last. Remember, anybody can tear something down. If you are not yet married, be sure the woman you marry is a wise woman who will help build your home.
