No Regrets

In his self-titled autobiography, legendary football coach Bum Phillips says, “You don’t want regrets at my age—when there is no time left in the game.”^a We would be wise to listen to Phillips. His autobiography is filled with all the life lessons he learned, from his time fighting in World War II to his years as coach of the Houston Oilers. The biggest lesson Coach Phillips learned was when he became a Christian, taking Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Phillips didn’t become a Christian until later in life, after years of living for himself. He states, “Christianity became a big part of my life—and thus a big part of my story—even if I steered away from it until I was 76 years old.”^b Have you, like Coach, steered away from becoming a follower of Christ? If so, why? What is holding you back?

Second Corinthians 6:2 states, “God says, ‘At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.’ Indeed, the ‘right time’ is now. Today is the day of salvation.” If you are not a follower of Christ, I want to encourage you to take the time today to examine the Christian faith and ask the hard questions. Do the hard work, for the last thing you want is to be in the fourth quarter of life with time running out and to be standing there with a life full of regret instead of the peace that is available to you in Christ.^c

God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.
