How They Keep Score

Jack Welch was the CEO of General Electric for many years. Welch was known for making things simple. He once said, “If you want to succeed in any organization, find out who keeps score, how they keep score, and score.”

Welch knew that as a leader, one of his greatest challenges and opportunities was to liberate his people so that they might perform for the company and be rewarded by the company. He gave opportunity, but he also didn’t allow his subordinates to hijack the vision or take the rest of the team down. In this regard, he was tough with those who weren’t pulling their weight. Consider this perspective when he talked about firing “jerks” in his company. He said, “Public hangings are teaching moments. Every company has to do it. . . . CEOs can talk and blab each day about culture, but the employees all know who the jerks are.”

Proverbs 14:35 states, “A king rejoices in wise servants but is angry with those who disgrace him.” American Christianity has largely avoided the conversation regarding authority and subordination as a means to honor God, but when you study the life of Jesus, you see it on almost every page.

As a man, you will most likely live your life both in and under authority. Scripture calls us to honor authority. When you do, life goes well for you. When you don’t, there are consequences.

If you are under authority, remember that God has put people in places of authority, and he calls us to show them honor even if we don’t like them. You see, God prepares you to lead by teaching you to follow. So deal wisely by honoring the king, and God will honor you.

If you are in authority, you are blessed when those under your authority honor your leadership. Bless them for doing so and give them the opportunity to score.
