Sitting in the Deer Stand

Do you hunt much? There is something special that happens when fall rolls around. We head to our sporting goods store, purchase our new hunting licenses, and prepare for opening day. One of the greatest gifts that a young man can receive is the gift of learning to hunt. We live in an increasingly urbanized society with weekends booked with sports and church commitments. After our battles on the athletic fields, we head home and jump right onto our tablets or phones and then turn on the television and watch college and pro football.

Time in the deer stand lets you get away from all the distractions of our modern world. It allows you to absorb all the sounds and smells of nature, and if you are fortunate, take aim at an eight- or ten-point buck. In those moments, you can experience the awe and wonder of God’s creation like never before. It is good to be reminded of the simplicity and beauty of his creation, and it is also good to teach it to your children.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 states, “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth.” Some of the greatest moments I have had with my children came as we got out into nature, whether that be the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, the beaches of the Florida panhandle, or the vast acreage of South Texas. Exploring together, catching fish from the beach while playing in the surf, and hunting with my sons has created some amazing memories. As they say at REI, “Get outside.” It will do you good.

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth.
