Monday-morning Quarterback Blues

Monday-Morning Quarterback Blues

Monday-morning quarterbacks are a dime a dozen. “They should have gone for it on fourth down.” “He shouldn’t have thrown it there.” It is easy to be sitting on the sidelines of life, criticizing people who are actually in the game.

You may have a Monday-morning quarterback in your midst. It could be the team member who contributes little but talks a lot. It could be a family member who is constantly nagging you. Or maybe you are your own Monday morning quarterback, criticizing your own life.

As a pastor, I must confess that Mondays can be tough. You see, I naturally replay the film of the previous day in my mind and wonder how I really did. “Was anyone blessed? Did I truly minister to anyone? I could have said that better.” I also reflect, not on the encouraging words from those in my church, but on the words of the people who don’t hesitate to tell me what I could have done better.

When discouragement and despair come to you first thing in the morning, attack it. One of the best ways to shift the momentum of your day is to get a workout in, then seek inspiration by reading Scripture. Next, do something on your to-do list that is hard. Run, pray, and tackle a difficult task. Don’t run from the despair, but hit it straight on. When you do, you will agree with the words of Psalm 118:24, which states, “This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.
