My Favorite Coffee Mug
My Favorite Coffee Mug
I love a good cup of coffee. I especially love a good cup of coffee at a nice restaurant after a good meal. There is a richness to the drink that I truly enjoy. At various times through my years of drinking coffee, I have adopted favorite coffee mugs.
One of my favorite mugs at home was cracked. It was a nice, everyday pattern that somehow splintered but never fell apart. As Sunday morning would roll around, I would intentionally use this mug before preaching, reminding myself that I am just a cracked vessel and praying that God would use me.
Then I bought a mug on vacation from Seaside, Florida, that simply says, “Seaside.” What a glorious place! When I drink out of that mug, I remember the great times we had on that family vacation, my long runs at the beach, and the beauty of the Emerald Coast.
For Father’s Day one year, Brady got me an extra-large coffee mug that reads, “My Dad Is a Big Deal.” Being funny, he taped over some of it so that when I opened it, it would read, “My Dad Is Big.” Considering I’m six feet five inches and over 250 pounds, he thought he was being hilarious.
But my favorite mug of all time is one I have to wash by hand. My daughter, Carson, who loves to do artwork, went to a pottery store and decorated it for my birthday when she was five or six years old. The mug reads, “I (heart) Dad.” It is blue with yellow dots, the words on it are raised off the side of the mug, and the heart is colored red. On the bottom is her handwritten name. It is a treasure that I hope I will never break or lose.
Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 states, “I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.” I am trying to appreciate the simple things, like coffee mugs, a bit more, seeing them as gifts from God.
I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.
