Fundamentals Are Fun

My son Cooper is a huge Houston Rockets fan. He even has James Harden and Hakeem Olajuwon socks—the kind where the player’s likeness is printed on them. When Cooper had the chance to go to a Rockets summer basketball camp, he asked me, “Dad, what do you think we will cover at the Rockets camp?”

I quickly replied, “Fundamentals.” He then said, “Those aren’t fun.” I said, “Maybe so, but they lead to fun.”

Like Coop, many people believe that the fundamentals aren’t all that fun, and rehearsing them over and over seems to be drudgery. But in all disciplines, including relationships, when things break down, it is because the fundamentals have been abandoned. When you step back and examine the situation, it becomes clear that everything seems to work its way back to fundamentals.

The most fundamental aspect of the Christian faith is love. First Corinthians 13:7-8 states, “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!”

As a result, I try to start every day with an action of love toward my wife and children. I find that when the smallest, simplest, most rudimentary action, like making my wife a cup of coffee, is practiced, it sets the tone for the entire house. Then I can truly say, “Fundamentals really are fun.”

Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!
