A Quiet Impact

In today’s culture, awards mean a lot. So much of what we do is in order to get accolades and praise from friends, coworkers, family members, or even people we do not know. During his years in college, Tim Tebow received practically every award that a football player can get. While helping him move out of his apartment, Tim’s dad peeked in a box that was full of trophies and awards that he knew nothing about. Not only were the awards not displayed in Tim’s apartment, but his parents were often surprised by the people who would call and tell them that they had received a call or a visit from Tim.

His father noted, “To Tim it is not about the fanfare. He genuinely cares about people. He keeps those things private because it’s not about the accolades.”

When I hear this story, I am reminded of Matthew 6:1, which says, “Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.” When you do the good God has put in your heart to do, don’t do it for recognition by others, because their praise is empty. Do it for the recognition of your Father in heaven. He’ll be sure to reward you, and that reward will last for all eternity.

What good will you do today? Is there someone at your office who is going through a hard time? Is there a homeless person in your community whom you see often but have failed to think about helping? Consider being a blessing to others, but keep it between you and the Lord.

Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.
