Learning to Say Yes

You and I live in a culture that constantly cries out to us to get more, hoard more, and consume more for ourselves. Learning to live with an open hand is scary for many. But a life of generously sharing our income will give us, as described in the Bible, “the life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19, MSG). We can say yes to being generous with our money, whether at home or at church.

There is great joy in the homes of those who intentionally seek to bless their wives and children through being generous with their money. These gifts don’t have to be big-ticket items; a surprise coffee drink from her favorite coffee shop or a bouquet of flowers will show your wife that you care about her and want to bless her. When I can, I try to treat my children, too.

Another way you can be generous is by joining others in God’s church to resource its mission, vision, and operations. Jesus never invalidated the tithe introduced in the Old Testament, and the first fruits offering is a proclamation of his death and resurrection. Begin with giving the first tenth of your income, and grow in the grace of giving. This discipline is a fundamental aspect of being a Christian.

Second Corinthians 9:7-8 states, “‘God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’ And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” Say yes to your family and the church, and enjoy taking the first steps toward “the life that is truly life.”
