In Season and out of Season

I’ve had a few opportunities to join the guys of Prime Cut, SB Nation Radio’s nationally syndicated afternoon drive time show, to share about matters of faith and how they intersect with the sports world. These moments have been quite fun for me, because I had planned to go into sports broadcasting when I was in high school. Many of the guys at SB Nation Radio have become my friends, and when I have done segments with them, they have allowed me to openly share my opinion and faith perspective.

I have been asked questions about Russell Wilson’s contract size and whether or not God really spoke to him when he threw that interception on the two-yard line in Super Bowl XLIX. I have been asked how I thought Monty Williams’s faith was going to sustain him through the sudden loss of his wife, Ingrid, after she was killed in a head-on collision. As I have gone back and listened to the segments afterward, I have tried to learn from my time on air. I want to make sure I am representing the Lord well.

When we are asked a question about our faith, how should we respond? Second Timothy 4:2 tells us to “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season” (ESV).

I count it a privilege to be able to answer questions about faith and how it impacts and intersects with those in the sports world on a program that is being broadcast in over sixty markets. But you don’t have to be on a radio program or be interviewed by media to effectively speak of your faith.

I have learned that when we are put in a positon to answer questions about our faith, we need not panic, be nervous, or wonder if we gave the right answer. Instead, in the moment, we can simply pray, Lord, use me to honor you, and answer the questions graciously and honestly so that we can bear witness to Christ and bring glory to the Father.

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season.
