Yesterday Ended Last Night

The 2015–16 Houston Rockets had a disappointing first half of the season. After going to the Western Conference Finals at the end of the previous season, the Rockets, just a few games into the 2015–16 campaign, fired head coach Kevin McHale. In my estimation, McHale was the one who got them to play defense in 2015 when they really didn’t want to put in the effort. So, after a bizarre move by the owner, Les Alexander, the Rockets struggled to play defense well without McHale’s leadership.

I am well aware that this is only my opinion of what happened to the Rockets. It could be that McHale was the one not serving the organization well. Whatever the case, we live in a “What have you done for me lately?” world. Governing how you will adapt to change and work through those shifts will require you to have the right mind-set.

Proverbs 6:6-8 challenges us to not sit on our laurels, regretting our past mistakes or admiring our trophies in the trophy case: “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.”

John Maxwell, author and worldwide leadership trainer, used to keep a sign on his desk that read, “Yesterday Ended Last Night.” It was a constant reminder to him that the successes or failures of the previous day or season would have little impact on his success going forward.

Did you have a good day yesterday? Be thankful, but keep at it. Do you have regrets from yesterday? Learn from your mistakes, but find grace. Whatever the case, remember, “Yesterday ended last night.”
