You Are Going to Make It

Just before he went on a few road trips to check out colleges, Jake, a high school senior, went with his friends to play Frisbee golf at Rice University. While there, he decided to jump on the trampoline for just a few minutes. Unfortunately, Jake never got to go on those road trips, because he fractured bones on both sides of his ankle while jumping on the trampoline.

After surgery to insert nine screws, and a few weeks of doing nothing at home, Jake got his doctor’s permission to return to school. However, when Jake and his grandmother got to the nurse’s office, the nurse told him that he wouldn’t be allowed to return to school. He was still wearing a soft cast, and she was concerned there were just too many students who could injure him further.

While Jake was waiting for the nurse’s final ruling, a small boy who had to use a walker approached Jake. This boy’s legs were deformed, and every step was a struggle for him. He neared Jake, standing eye-to-eye as Jake sat in his wheelchair, and said, “When you go to rehab, do whatever the therapists tell you. Work as hard as you can and try really hard. You are going to make it.”

Jake responded with a quick high five and a “Thanks, man!” His grandmother was taken aback by this courageous young man who had just encouraged her grandson to give it his best.

First Peter 5:12 says, “My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace.” What if, like Peter and this young man with a walker, we saw it as our purpose to encourage others so that they would experience God’s grace? An encouraging word is refreshing to those going through difficult times. Let them know, “You are going to make it!”

My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace.
