Hey, Look at Me

In the age of the selfie, we live in a world that says, “Hey, look at me!” Marketers are so savvy that they have developed the “selfie stick” in order for selfie picture takers to get an even better angle of themselves. I am afraid that if I used a selfie stick, all you would see is my increasingly balding head.

What we lack, though, in our culture are men and women who will say to their sons and daughters, their neighbors’ children, the kids on the team that they coach, “Hey, look at me!” when it comes to being a good example. Proverbs 23:26 states, “O my son, give me your heart. May your eyes take delight in following my ways.”

Solomon told his son to look at him, to follow after him, to go where he went and do what he did. Nearly half of the children being raised in this generation in the United States have no father in the home. As a result, the daily example that they are called to look toward isn’t there. Might you be a surrogate father for a child on your street? Might you help fill the increasing gap in our homes so that this coming generation might know which way to go?

Rise up and live in such a way that you have no problem telling your sons, daughters, and other youth in your community to follow after you, because whether you realize it or not, they are already looking at you, wondering if you are one they can follow.

O my son, give me your heart. May your eyes take delight in following my ways.
