From Coach to Consultant

Dad, have you ever felt you might be in the way of your kids? It was a tough day when I realized I needed to take a step back from being the play-calling influencer that I normally am to being a sideline observer. It was a difficult realization, but one that I had to come to if my oldest son was going to stand on his own.

That is the aim for our children, isn’t it? Isn’t it our desire for our kids to become the men and women who are able to stand on their own two feet?

For that to happen for my son Brady, I had to stop being the coach all the time, and I had to shift to the consulting role. I am still present and am still challenging him, but I am also mindful that I am no longer calling all of the plays. Notice I used the word all. I still call some of the plays, but as he gets older, it will be less and less.

By the time he leaves my house, I need him to be able to call his own plays. My hope, and my job going forward, is to make sure he knows who to listen to. The best thing I know to do is point him to the Lord, because that is where he will find the wisdom and knowledge that he needs.

Proverbs 1:7 says, “Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” If you are shifting from the role of coach to consultant, point your son or daughter to the Lord for the insight that he or she is going to need.
