A Hall of Fame Dad

Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, in the foreword to Dad’s Playbook, says, “If there were a Hall of Fame for husbands and dads, I’d make it my number one goal to get there. On the day I was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, just before I concluded my speech . . . I made a statement that I hope I can live up to. I said, ‘I sincerely love my family and know that being a Hall of Fame husband and dad is what will eventually define my life.’”^a

Guys, what goals do you have for your family or your legacy? Does the way you are living your life today lead to those goals? Many men strive for money. Being successful is important, and working to leave an inheritance is very honorable. But I have seen many a man lay his children on the altar of sacrifice for victory in the marketplace. Remember, you can’t take it with you.

Others strive for fame, recognition, or popularity among their peers. They will rearrange their schedules to be with someone important, to the detriment of their children. Keep in mind that the concern of man’s opinion is a trap according to Proverbs 29:25: “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety.”

Will you follow God’s plan or man’s plan for success? What will define your life? May it be the success of being a Hall of Fame husband and father!
