I’ll Sign You a Copy

“What are you doing?” my daughter asked me. “I’m writing my book,” I replied. “When will you be finished?” she then asked. “Very soon,” I replied. Carson continued, “Will it be a real book?” I smiled and said, “Yes, and I’ll sign you a copy.” Carson promptly looked at me and said, “No thanks, I like Junie B. Jones books.” All I could do was laugh at the sweet, honest, heart-breaking innocence of my six-year-old. She finally looked at me and said, “Sorry, Daddy,” to which I replied, “That’s quite all right.”

I love how God has a way of using the closest people in our lives not just for us to enjoy and do life with but to also speak truth to us. Peyton Manning, the only quarterback in NFL history who has taken two different teams to the Super Bowl and won, shares that the only way he has been able to improve in his career is by being willing to receive feedback from those closest to him. He names Coach David Cutcliffe, his former coach at Tennessee, as one of those men.

Here are a few verses to keep in mind when those closest to you are speaking the truth. First, Proverbs 1:5 states, “Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance.” Second, Proverbs 27:5-6 states, “An open rebuke is better than hidden love! Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.” You see, God has a way of allowing those who are near us to add value to us, if we would but listen. Seek to learn from what they have to offer, and continue to grow.
