Women - 365 Questions for a Woman's Soul
women - What can I learn about Jesus from the way he interacted with women? Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took his twelve disciples with him, along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons; Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples. Luke 8:1-3 Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.” John 8:10-11 IN FIRST-CENTURY JEWISH CULTURE, women were treated as second-class citizens. They were not permitted to be educated or to take part in public worship. The Bible is careful to emphasize that Jesus ministered to women in all levels of society, as seen from the list of women in Luke 8. The mention of Joanna, the wife of King Herod’s business manager, reminds us that Jesus’ influence reached far and wide, high and low. When the disciples deserted Jesus at his crucifixion, the women remained with him and ministered to him. Jesus valued women in every way.
