sin - What is really so bad about sin?

“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” The woman was convinced.

Genesis 3:4-6

Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

James 1:14-15

The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”

Psalm 32:8

SIN IS BOTH subtle and serious. It subtly begins with small lies that Satan whispers to our hearts: “God is holding out on you.” “You know better than God.” “God really isn’t good.” When we fail to recognize these thoughts as lies, we allow sin to take root. And the root of all sin is the distrust of God. When we don’t trust God, we make decisions based on what we believe is best, not on what God knows is best for us. It has been said that the beginning of sin isn’t disobedience but rather the resentment of obedience. Sin keeps you from trusting that surrendering your whole life to God leads to the best life you could ever have. What lies about God is Satan trying to convince you of right now? Where is it hard to trust that God’s way is best? Ask God to help you notice subtle lies in your thoughts, combat them with truth from his Word, and have faith to trust him.
