quietness - Why are times of quietness important?

Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. So they left by boat for a quiet place.

Mark 6:31-32

“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the LORD told [Elijah]. . . . The LORD passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.

1 Kings 19:11-12

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.

Psalm 62:5

QUIETNESS can feel unfamiliar and even uncomfortable. However, when we quiet the inner and outer voices around us, we are able to hear God’s voice more clearly. People think that God speaks in a booming voice from heaven, but most often he speaks to people in the silence. It can be difficult to hear God when our days are filled with noise, interruptions, and distractions. Find a quiet moment with God today. It can be in your bedroom, while you’re driving, or even when you’re in the shower. Talk to him about what is on your heart, and then listen. As you spend time in silence with God, he slowly teaches you to recognize his voice.
