In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. . . . If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously.

Romans 12:6-8

The rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Mark 10:42-45

THE WORLD says that in order to be leaders, we must be powerful and successful and assert our authority over others. But Jesus calls his followers to a different kind of leadership; we are called to lead others with humility and a servant’s heart. This can happen only when our motive is to advance God’s Kingdom instead of our own. Each time we set aside our own desires or needs for the good of others and for God’s glory, we grow more into a leader who brings joy to God’s heart. Whether God has called you to be a leader within your church, home, or group of friends, ask him to help you lead with a servant attitude. Whose needs can you put above your own today? Keep close to God as you love others well, and he will show you how to lead his way.
