LAZINESS is traditionally considered one of the “seven deadly sins,” yet it is often overlooked. We tend to think of sin as doing something we should not do, but sin is also failing to do what we should. Signs of laziness could be neglecting our responsibilities, putting off obligations, failing to notice temptation, or being complacent in our faith. Everyone needs times of rest, but rest is different from laziness. Rest is purposeful. It refreshes us so that we can better love and serve God and others. Laziness is self-centered and is a sign of avoidance, detachment, and emptiness. Are you the kind of person who asks, “What needs to be done today?” or the kind who asks, “How can I avoid today’s tasks?” When you feel tempted by laziness, ask God to help you find purpose in work and refocus on what is most important today.
