OUR GOD is a creative God, and he made us in his image. God was able to imagine the heavens, earth, animals, and humans, and we are patterned after him, so he has certainly instilled some imaginative abilities within us. Using our imaginations can be a powerful tool to help us engage with God and Scripture in a new way. We can engage our imaginations as we read God’s Word by placing ourselves in a Bible story. Richard Foster writes in his book Prayer, “We begin to enter the story and make it our own. We move from detached observation to active participation.” So pick a story from the Bible and imagine yourself in the scene. What do you see? What do you feel? How do you experience God? Remember that your imagination is a gift from God. Ask the Holy Spirit to use this gift to deepen your relationship with Jesus as you experience him through his Word.
