Gossip separates the best of friends.

Proverbs 16:28

A gossip goes around telling secrets, so don’t hang around with chatterers.

The Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.”

1 Peter 3:10

OUR WORDS hold such power—even the ones we say behind one another’s backs. Gossip is tempting because it makes us feel like we are part of a secret. And let’s be honest: Depending on our circle of friends, gossip can make up a significant portion of our conversation. But gossip is much more dangerous than we realize. God’s Word tells us that gossip has the power to separate best friends, take away our good days, and lead us to sin. Likewise, God promises that controlling our tongues will reduce quarrels, help us avoid trouble, and lead to happier lives. In the end, the thrill of gossip isn’t worth the damage it causes. Perhaps God is asking you to refrain from gossip by limiting your time around certain friends, changing the subject when gossip comes up, or removing yourself from certain conversations. Take time to think about what God’s Word says regarding the tongue while asking yourself if your words are kind, loving, true, and necessary.
