THE BIBLE makes it clear that the motives of our heart are important to the Lord. We need to know the difference between a compliment and flattery because it’s all about the motivation behind the words. A sincere compliment is about the other person, designed to build up him or her. Flattery is all about us; we’re saying something nice just to get something in return. Sincere compliments are also true, whereas flattery tends to be exaggerated. Before offering another a compliment, ask yourself, Are my motives calculating or sincere? Self-serving or other focused? Ask the Lord to help you be aware of the motives behind your words so that you may sincerely build others up in love.
