WHEN TALKING with our friends or coworkers, it’s easy to gripe about everything from our jobs to our romantic relationships to our kids and even our churches. It is tempting to believe our complaining is just innocent banter or a way to get something off our chests. But complaining has a greater impact on our hearts and lives than we realize. It saps our joy and leaves us feeling bitter, discouraged, and ungrateful. Our words have the power to change the way we view our circumstances and even our relationship with God. That is why God’s Word emphasizes the incredible influence our tongues hold. We can actively fight against complaining by becoming aware of what comes out of our mouths and then, with the power of the Holy Spirit, changing irritable words into those that are thankful, cheerful, and encouraging to others. The attitude of your heart changes as you intentionally seek to change your words.
