A prayer of Surprise

Realizing that God isn’t defined by my expectations

Dear God,

You never cease to amaze me. You often do the opposite of what I would expect. You chose David, the youngest son of Jesse, to be king of Israel instead of his tall, strong, oldest brother. You took Saul, the most vicious opponent of the early church, and transformed him into Paul, the greatest and most courageous missionary of all time. You cared for and respected women in a time when they had no rights. And you used a crucifixion, the ultimate defeat, and made it the sign of victory over sin and death for all eternity. Your creativity and ingenuity know no boundaries. How often do I miss something wonderful you’ve done because I am expecting something else? God, don’t let me limit you to my own understanding, but allow me to recognize you in ways that inspire awe, love, gratitude, and joy.
