A Prayer For Empathy
A prayer for Empathy
When I want be in tune with others
O Lord,
I try to understand others, but sometimes I lack the empathy to connect with them and feel their joy or pain. I need you to teach me empathy. I know I lack it because I sometimes feel jealousy over a friend’s success or find myself enjoying the failure of an enemy. That doesn’t reflect your heart. If I were able to genuinely feel what another person feels—to experience the very same emotions he or she experiences—there would be no room for jealousy or competition. O Lord, as you teach me empathy, break through to my own heart, softening it toward others and helping me know how to comfort them, support them, and meet their needs. I’m tired of acting sad for hurting people or pretending to be happy for the joys of others. No, I want to be genuinely sorrowful with those who hurt and genuinely joyful with the successes of others. May I learn empathy so I can be responsive to the needs of others!
Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15
