A prayer for Obedience

When I struggle with the concept of obedience

O God,

Obedience is difficult for me. May I not see it as simply a set of rules or standards of behavior. Instead, may I see how obedience actually frees me to enjoy life as you intended because it keeps me from becoming entangled in harmful situations. I must admit that your commandments are sometimes difficult to obey or don’t always make sense from my human perspective, but I will trust that obedience to you will bring blessing, joy, and peace. When I look at obedience this way, I will desire to obey you out of love and gratitude for all you are trying to do for me rather than out of fear of being punished. The more I obey out of love, the more I will want to obey, and the more obedience will become a lifestyle rather than a chore. O God, you are the creator of life, so only you know how life is supposed to work. You say obedience works. May my obedience demonstrate my trust that your way is best, and that it will work for me.

If you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. James 1:25
