A prayer about Temptation

When I need to arm myself against temptation

Dear Jesus,

Satan has the power to overwhelm me if it’s just me against him. But with you, Jesus, Satan has no power. When you live in me in the form of the Holy Spirit, your power becomes available to me, and then Satan can be overwhelmed. Because of the Holy Spirit, I have the advantage in overcoming any temptation. The devil can tempt me, but he cannot coerce me. He can dangle the bait in front of me, but he cannot force me to take it. He’ll try every trick in the book to make me think I’m missing out, that I cannot and should not resist. But I can break free from temptation when I change my focus from what’s in front of me to who is inside me. Then I can discern the difference between the lies of temptation and the truth of your Word, between what seems so right and what’s really right. Dear Jesus, please help me think not about what I’m missing, but about what I’ll be gaining by obeying you and resisting temptation. Thank you that I have far more power available to me than I realize. When I arm myself with your Word and rely on the presence of your Spirit within me, temptations become moments in which I can experience your power helping me overcome.
